‘Megan doesn’t speak. She hasn’t spoken in months.

Pushing away the people she cares about is just a small price to pay. Because there are things locked inside Megan’s head – things that are screaming to be heard – that she cannot, must not, let out.

Then Jasmine starts at school: bubbly, beautiful, talkative Jasmine. And for reasons Megan can’t quite understand, life starts to look a bit brighter.

Megan would love to speak again, and it seems like Jasmine might be the answer. But if she finds her voice, will she lose everything else?’

Unspeakable was an absolutely incredible and moving story. So moving, that I was left almost fully in tears towards the end, and not many books have done that to me, making it join Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses at the top of my favourite books ever list.

Megan is a girl who has been unable to speak for a long time, due to holding a terrible secret close to her heart. However, after the arrival of Jasmine, things start to change for the better as Megan finally has someone she feels she can trust, as well as someone she is able to fully be herself with and connect to in a way that progresses much further than just friendship.

The book deals with some very heavy subjects that were dealt with brilliantly, including sexuality and the true effects of bullying on a person, both emotionally and physically.

I especially loved how we got to find out about Megan’s old best friend, Hana, through a series of thoughts and letters. these letters, added very well to the story, and made for a more chilling effect on the reader.

Every last emotion, thought and feeling that Megan had throughout the book, seemed so realistic and helped to make her such a strong character, probably more so than she would think, as well as someone who exuded vulnerability also. This made for a character you couldn’t help but love!

Sometimes with books, I find myself with unanswered questions, but not with this. As the book progressed, every question I could have had was answered for me, and I felt as though it finished perfectly. I was definitely impressed with Unspeakable. If you haven’t already, you should give it a try!
